Lindt Chocolate’s Worldwide Presence

Over 165 years ago, the story of Lindt chocolate began in Zurich’s old town with a confectionery shop owned by David Sprüngli-Schwarz and his son, Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann.  A man by the name of Rodolphe Lindt later developed an innovative process for chocolate manufacturing.  Lindt sold this trademarked technique and his business to the Sprüngli family and is how the Lindt & Sprüngli name exists today.  The company has gone through many different eras but the passion for chocolate making that drove the Sprüngli family as well as Rodolphe Lindt, is still very much alive.  With six production sites in Europe, two in the USA and distribution and sales offices on four continents, the Lindt & Sprüngli group remains a recognized leader and innovator in the premium chocolate industry.  Today, Lindt products are enjoyed in over 100 countries and the company and its presence continues to grow.

The worldwide headquarters is situated in Switzerland with a factory operating in Kilchberg.  Additional factories are located in Aachen, Germany; Oloron-Sainte-Marie, France, Iduno Olona, Italy; Gloggnitz, Austria, the United States and more.  Expansion of the company occurred in 1994 with the acquisition of the popular Austrian confectionery company ”Hofbauer”; followed by the acquisition of the traditional production company “Caffarel” in Turin, Italy.   The most recent Lindt & Sprüngli acquisition was of the “Ghirardelli Chocolate Company” which is located in San Francisco, California.

The US headquarters here in Stratham, New Hampshire expanded its facilities in 2010.  This 350,000-square-foot expansion includes a new cocoa processing plant that transforms beans into chocolate under one roof, making Lindt one of a few chocolate manufacturers in the world to have control over the whole process. Before adding the $30 million processing plant, the factory produced cocoa in Switzerland.  It was then shipped to New Hampshire to mix the additional ingredients needed to make truffles.  Lindt is now able to clean, roast and grind the beans in one place which drastically reduces carbon footprint.

Lindt & Sprüngli’s commitment to innovation and its worldwide growth ensures that consumers can expect the very best from the company. While the times change, so does Lindt’s products and efficiency.  Lindt looks forward to sharing that growth with you!

    Hi Bruce,

That is a very good question. While some of Lindt chocolate is now made in the United States, it is still considered Swiss as the recipe derived from Switzerland. Additionally, the Swiss quality and overall mission of Lindt and its chocolate still remains.
